11th Annual Rumour Awards: Firing Of The Year

As Wizard increased the amount of comics conventions they were running, they also shed staff, as both comvention organisers Jeff Serling and Spat Oktan went.

And just before the end of the year, Dirk Deppey announced that he'd been dropped by Fantagraphics.

But it would be DC that would make the firing headline thuis year,  as they went through a reorganisation, moving much of their New York offices to Burbank, but leaving behind publishing.

Richard Bruning, Greg Novack and Cheryl Rubin losing their Senior Vice Presidential jobs at the company, as did Steve Rotterdam, though he would set up his own geekspecialist agency with Ed Catto, as Bonfire Agency. Another publically happy endings include Mike Carlin landing on his feet at Warner Animation. And Alex Segura Jr sneaked out on his own when no one was looking, to head up publicity at Archie Comics.

But the sacking of Vertigo's editorial staff stands out as a particular sore point with Pornsak Pichetshote, Jonathan Vankin and Joan Hilty being shown the door, ostensibly over the cancellation of the Vertigo original graphic novel line. Pornsak, was also the editor of The Unwritten and originated that series' Choose-Your-Own-Adventure stand-out issue. Earlier in the year he had been previously picked within the company as an insanely talented editor to watch for the future. That future seemed to be about four months. So, he gains the ignomious title of Firing Of The Year. And the hope that he's ended somewhere splendid and appreciative of his mighty talents, in comics or in film.
