Booze Geek – Beast Mode And Transformers: Beast Wars

By Dylan Gonzalez

Beer: Beast Mode

Brewery: Sixpoint Brewery

ABV: 6.4%

timthumbJust prior to the Super Bowl, my liquor store received a shipment of Sixpoint Beast Mode. My boss stated that this should be the official beer of the Super Bowl because "Beast Mode" is what the receiver goes into when he is making an incredibly mad dash for the goal line. I saw it and thought of something else. But more on that later.

Beast Mode poured a deep brick red with a brownish hue. It created a good one-inch head that lasted for quite a while and left a lot of lacing. It gave off a surprisingly hoppy scent for a porter. I was really surprised by this (and clearly I had not done my research).

Imagine my reaction when hops were the prominent flavor in the beer. I could not believe how hoppy this porter was. There was a light malt character with a slightly roasted and chocolate flavors but generally speaking, the hops dominated this beer. I also found that it was very light for a porter, almost watery and there was little to no carbonation.

Overall, I was disappointed with this beer. If Sixpoint was aiming for a happier porter, then they have succeeded, but this is just not the beer for me. I want my porters heavy and thick, not thin and hoppy. If you want to experiment, then check out the Beast Mode, but I was not a big fan.

What To Drink This Beer To:

Beast_Wars_-_The_Ascending_2In the 80's, Transformers was one of the key building blocks for kids of the day. When I was growing up in the 90's, Beast Wars was my Transformers. I mean, obviously, they both hail from the same universe. But for a young kid of the 90's, I was really enamored by the ever-growing story of Beast Wars. It appealed to me mostly because of the dinosaur and insect themed bots, namely Megatron, Scorponok, Dinobot and one character I still find ever amusing to this day, Waspinator. Not to mention the CG graphics blew my then youthful mind.

So if you have a can of Sixpoint Beast Mode, I would suggest you enjoy it to some classic episodes of Beast Wars.
