Every Christmas, St. Nick ventures out into the stark cold to deliver gifts to children who have been good and nice all year round. But for those who haven't been, they must deal with…the Krampus, St. Nick's go to goat-horned guy for dealing with naughty children. Luckily, I managed to be on the good list and got a bottle of Southern Tier's Krampus (read: I bought it) as part of my Six Days of Christmas Beer.
Krampus was a Helles-style lager, on the Imperial side. It was amber brown with a medium-head. The beer was surprisingly aromatic; with a fresh piney scent to it, as well some lemon grass.
When I drank it, I was shocked to find that the beer was so flavorful for a lager. The combined notes of pine, earthiness, orange peel and spice indeed gave it a great taste, almost minty. It also had a good malt backbone. The body was full with a good amount of carbonation.
Overall, this beer super impressed me. Normally, I am not a huge fan of pilsners but damn did this one win me over. Highly recommended to you seek out a bottle of this before the season ends.
What to Drink This To:
The Krampus has slowly leaked into American culture over the years. Currently, Image Comics has released a series of the same name by Brian Joines and Dean Kotz following the exploits of the Christmas time brute as he rides around the globe on a flying wolf to save the power of the Santas.
Really though, wouldn't you want to have a pint with this guy?
