Fifteen Thoughts About Doctor Who – The Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone
"Spoilers!" – River Song
1. What, Don't They Have Phones In the 51st Century?
Winston Churchill has one. And anyway, what's wrong with the psychic paper? Okay, I suppose this was was just a bit stylish wasn't it. Very James Bond/Silk Spectre, The Corridors, the guns, the gun-lighter, the leaving-a-message-for-the-future happened a few times in Blink. And is still nicked from Back To The Future III. Thankfully no one actually cares when you've got red stilletto heels in space.
2. You Can't Blink. But You Can Wink.
A weakness in the original Blink, and Amy's right there on it. She knows a lot doesn't she? Almost… too much. Coiuld anyone have popped back in time to brief her? Given her a few cliff notes about what she might be about to encounter? Or is she just *that* good…
3. We've All Seen Aliens You Know
A group of marine-like religious officials out to catch a deadly creature with the Doctor. They're going to die aren't they? All of them. After walking into a trap where, basically, the walls come alive. Still, clerics versus Angels. Nice.
4. If River Song Is The Doctor's Future Wife – Why Isn't She With The Doctor?
Apart from being in prison of course. And that was for killing a brilliant man, a good man, a hero was it? That the Doctor doesn't want to know about? That means The Doctor wouldn't want to help her? The Doctor was there at River's death. Will River be there for The Doctor's? Will she be responsible for it?
5. A Consciousness That Has Extended Beyond Death, Communicating Electronically Eh?
Silence In The Library there. Also being surrounded by the dark using flashlights to stop the enemy approaching. A but of cut-and-pasting capped off with a nice extended monologue by the Doctor. Moffat 101.
6. Good Tricks With Gravity.
It's been an age since 2001. There should be more of this thing.
7. Do You Wish To Delete This Person? Warning, Cannot Undo.
That's one nasty crack in time. And a heartbreaking moment for people about to die who can't remember that the same thing just happened with their comrades.
8. Yes About That Cyber King
People don't remember it. Amy doesn't remember the Daleks. Is Moffat continuing his mission to have Everything Make Sense? Is this why Van Statton didn't remember the Dalek in 2012 back in series one? And the ducks in the duckpond?
9. Now That's A Self Sacrifice.
"I wish I'd known you better." "I think, sir, you've known me at my best". Proper British stiff upper lip public school army officer there, what? Well I got a tremble in mine.
10. Walk Like You Can See! Don't Open Your Eyes! Simon Says!
It's like some kind of twisted part game isn't it? With rules that keep changing, and a very oppressing music track being played over everything. And doesn't this make the Angels seem a bit, I dunno, thick?
11. Moving Angels! Moving Angels! Moving Angels!
Okay, they can only be so thick for so long. I thought their stone form was their still form? Why does their moving form look like their stone form?
12. Hang On Didn't We Do This With The Daleks As Well?
Yes, yes we did. In Doomsday. At least the others can hang on properly a bit better this time. No teleporting trans-dimensional dads to pop in.
13. Haven't We Heard Mention Of The Pandorica Before?
Yes, back in Episode 1, Prisoner Zero said that "The Pandorica will open and silence will fall…"
Episode 12 is called The Pandorica Opens and the synposis reads "A message on the oldest cliff-face in the universe, a puzzle box opening from the inside and a love that lasts thousands of years… The fates are drawing close around the Tardis – is this the day the Doctor falls?"
A fairytale future meeting for River Song and The Doctor? That ends, as the best fairytales so, in death and destruction?
14. Is This Doctor Who Or An Episode Of Coupling?
Seriously Ms Pond, show some dignity won't you? No, I mean seriously, I mean hold something back. What would your aunt think? And sexual innuendo about "getting sorted out" at teatime? Someone call the moral authorities!
And the Doctor really can be as stupid as a rushed Weeping Angel sometimes.
Hang on. How did he get his jacket back?
15. Oh All Right, River's From The Present Then
Gone and buggered that theory right up. Well! Um! What about The Blackberry Storm phone seen in Episode 1, the part that, I guess, was now in June 2008. WHen it was released in June 2009? Eh? Eh?
I'll shut up now.
So the vampires… maybe they're the ducks from the duck pond!
