Friday Runaround – Occupy, Vaginas And Neil Gaiman
OccupyWatch: Occupy Comics gains Amanda Palmer, Darick Robertson and Dan Goldman. No news of Frank Miller's impending involvement.
VaginaWatch: Laura Hudson looks at the curious use clown car jokes in Suicide Squad.
HibbsWatch: Brian Hibbs on the digital download included "baggage"
"Well, let's take bags for the example: bags cut down on browsing, they don't "sit right" on a rack (as they generally don't have a true edge), and they look shabby. There's some interesting questions on the secondary market as to whether or not a bagged comic without the bag is still "mint." They add shipping weight (which we retailers pay for), and, based on recent experiences, they're both prone to more distribution damages as well as taking up more room in shipping boxes, increasing costs."
PurpleWatch: We're used to TV and film casting characters of a different colour to the original. Looks like it's happening again in the Jessica Jones TV series.
Are you going to keep him purple?
I doubt it. It may become too cartoony for the tone of it. But who knows? I mean, we have to get in there, we have to get a greenlight for the script first and get in there and design it. But, you know, I'm open to interpretations of him. The tone of this is very gritty and very real, and I'm not sure if purple skin will do it. Maybe he'll put on a purple suit…
PublisherWatch: From advertising to stock market player to comic book publisher, the story of Koyama Press
"I wanted to leave advertising and had planned to take a year off to travel but fell ill and wasn't able to travel or work for a long time. Later I was terminally diagnosed with brain aneurysms but opted for a risky surgery that was successful. I still have another aneurysm but choose to mostly ignore it.
"During my non-working years, I built up a nest egg by playing the stock market. After I survived the surgery I wanted to do something other than film so I started funding projects with local emerging artists and that led quite accidentally to the making of the first book.
"I did a few more projects that involved zines and little comics and enjoyed that, so I devoted all my time and resources to starting a company that publishes and helps emerging artists."
ComparisonWatch: Marzi and Persepolis… there's going be a lot of this.
"Reading "Marzi,"one is immediately struck by its similarities to "Persepolis," a similar tale of another little girl growing up under a repressive regime (Iran). In addition, both Sowa and "Persepolis" creator Marjane Satrapi use a fluid, cartoony style, which serves not only to invite the reader with its gentle charm, but also to serve as a counterpoint to the harsh, serious world in which the protagonists live.
"But there are strong differences as well. "Persepolis,"for example, gives us enough of the adult perspective that we understand both the little girl and the forces acting on her. But "Marzi" eschews the latter almost entirely, allowing us only what she herself witnessed, and how she understood it."
This is Computo the Comic Link Conqueror speaking. I come for your women. But for now I merely collate comic-related bits and pieces online. One day I will rule. Until that day, read on.
They say I am a work in progress. The fools.
