"I Can't Tell You Stuff Like That!": Jim Butcher on Dresden, Writing Comics, His New Home and More
Let's be honest: if you're here to read a post about a Barnes & Noble Q&A/signing session with "The Dresden Files" author Jim Butcher, then it's pretty safe to assume that you're a fan of his work so I'll spare you the formal introduction. What I will tell you is that Butcher appeared on Friday night at the Tribeca store in New York City for an open, honest – and incredibly enjoyable – back-and-forth with the fans in attendance.
Promoting Brief Cases, a new hardcover collection of Dresden short stories that includes eleven previously-published stories and a new novella that was released on June 5, Butcher covered a wide range of topics that you can heck out for yourselves below:
● On the differences between writing a book and a comic book; and what it was like writing Spider-Man and Dr. Strange for Marvel Comics:
● On what it was like and what he learned from the Dresden televison series experience:
● On how close he sticks to his original 20-book outline; and some thoughts on his son, the writer:
● On how he felt about the Chicago Cubs finally winning The World Series from a storyline standpoint:
● On the irony of a hat-wearing Dresden on the covers of the novels:
● On the timeframe for the next Dresden novel, then an update about his life in his new home; including how he's become obsessed with his kitchen and how owning a new home has forced him to be more social:
● On his idea for a Dresden spin-off series when his run on the original ends:
● On feeling what he puts his characters through – and the glee that comes with messing with the readersip:
● On his future ideas, including a sci-fi story that he's been meaning to get back to for ten years:
● On the importance of long-term storyling, citing Babylon 5 as an example – to the delight of the crowd:
● On whether he plans on applying aspects of his personal life onto Dresden:
● On how he knows if a concept is better suited as a short story or novel:
● On not being a huge fan of collaboration:
● Side note? The following videos are for diehard readers of "The Dresden Files," "Codex Alera," and "Cinder Spires" series, so I won't insult you by trying to fake the funk while writing you in the eye. If you're a fan of Butcher's work, there's a little something in each of the following videos for you…enjoy!
