Markovia's Future in the DC Universe From Doomsday Clock – The Outsiders
The new issue of Doomsday Clock by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, the unauthorised sequel to Watchmen and published by DC Comics, is showing the future of the DC Universe Earth and the superheroes who live on it, around the world. The Supermen Theory, currently causing global uproar, points out that 97% of the superheroes live in the USA. But other countries are catching up…
But who is who? Let's look at the new Outsiders – who may be very different to the Outsiders currently being set up in the DCU. For a start, they are based in the DC fictional East-European country, Markovia. Somewhere Ozymandias may not know about…
Baroness Bedlam – first appearance Mister Miracle #2, 1971, created by Jack Kirby. A being of pure psionic energy and typically invisible, he can appear in the form of a face. He commands androids he has created to carry out manual wishes, possess them or control many at once. Has paranoid pills to make his enemies go insane. He became an escape artist on Earth, Baron Bedlam, and most recently in the New 52, as one of Steppenwolf's Hunger Dogs. What a misgender – Baroness Bedlam is probably related to Baron Bedlam, a Markovian and Outsiders villain created by Mike Barr and Jim Aparo in Batman And The Outsiders #1 in 1983. Frederick DeLamb, or Baron Bedlam is a constant political agitator trying to overthrow the government and stage a coup. Oh and he's a bit of a Nazi. Maybe the Baronness staged a coup on him?
Knightfall's first appearance was in Batgirl #10 in 2012 created by Gail Simone and Alitha Martinez as a foe. A devious tactician, Charise Carnes has a vast network of lawyers, judges, and other officials at her beck and call and a family fortune to back it up. She is also a formidable combatant with the two knives she wields that were used to slaughter her family.
Terra IV – there have been three Terras. The first, Terra Markov, sister to Geo-Force, created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, and debuted in New Teen Titans #26 in 1982, the second Terra, a doppelgänger of Tara Markov, debuted in New Titans #79 in 1991 was created by Marv Wolfman and Tom Grummett, while the third Terra, Atlee, debuted in Supergirl #12 in 2007 and was created by Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and Amanda Conner. This… is Terra IV. So who knows.
Wylde – created by Mike W Barr and Paul Pelletier in The Outsiders #1: Alpha in 1993. Charlie Wylde was the former bodyguard of Technocrat on a business trip when they were attacked by a vicious bear, Charlie and the bear were both killed in the fray. Faust offered to bring Charlie back to life and the bear and Charlie were merged together to bring about the out of control Wylde.
Geo-Force – Prince Brion Markov, brother of the first Terra and royal head of Markovia. Founding member of The Outsiders, he first appeared in a special insert in The Brave and the Bold #200 in 1983 and was created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo.
We will continue journeying around the world today at this link… let me know if I got anything wrong in the comments.
Thanks to DC Wiki and Wikipedia… and Chris for the Bedlam flub.
