Small Kickstarter, Big Book: Lorenzo Etherington And His Deluxe Collection Part 2
By Olly MacNamee
I make no qualms about shouting from the rooftops to all and everyone about the remarkable talents of The Etherington Brothers (Monkey Nuts, Long Gone Don) and this is unashamedly another one of those times. Lorenzo Etherington – he who supplies the art to his brother, Robin's words – and who's work appears most regularly in the UK's weekly Phoenix anthology comic, has launched a modest Kickstarter campaign to raise funds towards the publishing of his new Godzilla-proportioned art sketchbook, The Deluxe Collection Part 2.
Coming in at 600 pages (yes, you read that right, I didn't slip on the keyboard), measuring 8.5" x 8.5" and costing just £25, this tome promises to be something special for fans of his work, or for fans of great, humorous anarchic illustrations comprising of sections devoted to character designs, gesture sheets, robots, monsters as well as some of Lorenzo's unpublished comic strips. The traditions of The Beano, The Dandy and other such UK comics are rudely alive and well and in safe hands I'm glad to report and this book gives you a peek behind the scenes, so to speak.
Four years in the making, the lucky backer could walk away with any number of incentives, depending on the size of the pledge; from a signed copy of the book (£25) to the more lavish package that a £70 pledge will get you: signed copies of Parts 1 and 2, a random monster sketch as well as a piece of original art that features in the sketchbook.
With a publishing date of February it may be too late for Christmas, but its never too late to spoil yourself. The book is guaranteed to be a treasure trove for young and old and in including such sections as the aforementioned gesture sheets, a great tool to support budding artists in the making. You only need to view the art accompanying this article to realize what a talent Lorenzo Etherington is and what a well-thumbed book this is intended to be. This is no ordinary coffee table book; this is designed to be seen, to be used and to be loved.
