Tom Cruise puts his Real D Aviators on

3D haters, the fad you hoped would die out quickly after Avatar is not quite on its last breath yet. Titanic 3D made pretty good box office, after all, and Finding Nemo 3D didn't do so bad this weekend either. Now Top Gun 3D may be ready for its moment in the sun.

The film will be shown at this Thursday's 3D Entertainment Summit as a tribute to its late director Tony Scott, according to Market Saw. Poignant tribute or crass marketing ploy? You decide. For what it's worth, Scott apparently loved the conversion done by Legend 3D, telling the company owners, "Legend3D, you guys are f___king awesome!"

As early as late 2011, company head Rob Hummel maintained the release of the 3D converted film would not move forward without the blessing of its director:

As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I known they want to get Tony Scott's approval before they go forward.

Hummel also said:

I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight. You can have fun with 3D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen.

Is he right? It probably won't be too long until we all get the chance to find out for ourselves.
