WOWIO Restructures For 2010 – And The Apple Tablet?
Wowio was an early publishing model for digital comics. Burning through venture capital, it paid publishers $1 for every comic read online – yet gathered much less advertising revenue from the publication. A number of publishers made a lot of money, very quickly, but soon there were problems, delays and the final payments under this system were delayed for years.
Wowio switched to a different model that saw the publishers partially responsible for raising the revenue and interest fell through the floor. Well, Wowio is back. With a new plan.
The new model will see publisher set a price to read their titles, with 100% of the revenue after transaction fees, going to the publisher. Compared to the likes of Apple and Amazon, who take a large cut, this is a major difference. Publishers can have their own Wowio websites and can make any given pages of an issue available free, as a preview. Wowio is also removing banner ads, and including a greater social networking aspect to the site, and encouraginbg the addition of "supplemetal materials" to each book, to enhance the reader experiece – interviews, videos, script and the like. Wowio will be bringing back the sponsorhip moel for free books as well, details of which will be announced later.
Is this too late for Wowio? Or with Apple's iPad/iSlate/iTablet on the way, is it just in time?
