Ryan Odagawa And Barbara Randall Kesel Team For Shadowzone: In The Realm of the Kiv

Back on Free Comic Book Day, or rather the day after since the Comic Bug made it last two days… I sat next to the talented Barbara Randall Kesel and enjoyed hearing stories of her years in the comic industry. Stories I've sworn not to repeat. Her experience as a writer (Batgirl, Hawk & Dove, Meridian, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic) and editor (Watchmen,  Hellboy, New Teen Titans, Star Wars: Dark Empire) is awe inspiring and she even helped me solidify an idea that I had only been playing with in the back of my mind… She reached out to me the other day because she is doing a Kickstarter with artist Ryan Odagawa.

Shadowzone

The book is called Shadowzone: In the Realm of KIV and tells the story of two sisters that are torn apart after their parent's death. Odagawa has had the idea for the series for years, long before he entered comics. His first book in the industry was back in 1996, an issue of Savant Garde for Wildstorm with writer Kesel. He's worked in the industry now for over 20 years with Wildstorm, Marvel, Film Roman and Blizzard Entertainment. When he finally decided he was ready to do Shadowzone, he reached out to Kesel to be the writer and who helped pull all the pieces together.

The plot for graphic novel is:

SHADOWZONE tells the story of KANDORA and CORINA, two sisters separated by years and distance after the tragic day their parents were killed. Kandora was kept behind in the kingdom of SAGONNA under the watchful eye of the warlord IREK, who established himself as her protector and Regent, while Corina was spirited away to grow up under the guidance of ANON, a Monk of the Qi-on (Way of the Rising Spirit).

Kandora has been touched by the corruption of the Kiv, which drives her to try to find the missing peace within herself, a path that will put her in direct conflict with Corina. Crystal lance meets martial arts as the two battle for the fate of Baydera.

Odagawa says that the book is 80-90% finished already with plans to wrap it up by August / September. He has Dave Lanphear and Troy Peteri of A Larger World lettering. Below you will find sample pages of art along with a teaser video. For more information or to support the project, click here.
