Sandman Overture #3 Is A Total Continuity Geekfest. And I Love It.
Sandman Overture #3 is released today, by Neil Gaiman and JH Williams III, continuing the story of Dream and Dream Cat wandering reality together, towards their fate, revealed in Sandman #1.
And it's a total geekfest.
So very, very pretty. We get the planet Tharn from Legion Of Superheroes, and the Hecate from Sandman – and DC horror – past. But we also get both the Green Lantern Corps and the Space Canine Patrol Corps, equated as being of a similar ilk, and to be taken with a similar seriousness.
And the whole book, taking out characters to the City Of Stars, is very reminiscent of the Endless Nights story, where all the stars and planets that will be Earth, Krypton, Oa and more meet in a social fashion.
But more than that. This comic was sold as telling us the story of Dream, before Sandman. But it is also being used to tell us stories we only glimpsed before.
Because, and this goes out to those of you who loved A Game Of You more than anything else at the time (which was totally true of me) Sandman Overture #3 tells you the story of Alianora, a lover of Dream. We learn of her scar. We learn of her love. And we learn how she gained the Dreamstone, and the skerry of the Dreaming, that would one day become Barbie's World.
Yeah, and you just thought you were reading a comic about a man and his cat.
We also learn about the bones of the creatures that form the gates to Dream's castle, and that formed Dream's most distinctive helm.
Oh, the fan fiction that will have to be rewritten now… or recontextualised in dreams….
Issue 4. Now please. Now.
