The Future Of Spawn After #300 (Spoilers)

Today's Spawn begins with the power counter. Set at 9.9.9.9 in the very first issue of Spawn, the conceit was that with each use of his power, the back-from-the-dead Al Simmons would get closer and closer to going back to hell. In the twenty-seven years since, that has gone through a number of twists and turns. But in Spawn #300 it starts off like this. The Future Of Spawn After #300 (Spoilers)

It also starts off with the slaughter of the Johnston clan, which I am trying not to take personally. The necroplasm counter gets considerably lower through the issue. But during that story much changes – and some folk get re-introduced.

Right from the beginning, Spawn was portrayed as Al Simmons, a black man, under a full face mask and body suit. Horrifically scarred, if you didn't know he was black, you wouldn't have been able to guess. And any attempt to turn himself human again with his powers, made him look like a white guy wth blonde hair – part of Malebogia's curse upon hin. Yeah, it was a bit weird.

But today, with the power counter dropping to zero, and his symbiote suit stripped from him, we get a very new look for Spawn. For Al Simmons.

You know the rest. In the back of today's Spawn #300, Todd lays out what is to come, as well as referring to one of the Spawn #300 covers as showing the future. He writes,

Greg Capullo Chapter: This chapter shows the shift in Spawn's new powers and makes a statement as to who Spawn is and who Spawn will be going forward.

Todd McFarlane Chapter: This chapter shows that there will be conversion along the way. Just like in real life, some people will jump from good to evil and vice versa.

J. Scott Campbell Chapter: This chapter shows how characters preexisting in the Spawn lore can be subject to constant change like Spawn himself.

Jason Shawn Alexander Chapter: This chapter shows what happens when characters decide to band together. Jerome Opeha Chapter: This chapter shows everything that has happened in the Spawn mythos, has been going on for centuries. The cover by Jerome Opefia, although it doesn't show all the actual characters in this book, shows you some of possibilities of what to expect in the future.

All of this is going to lead to the Spawn Power Meter being reset and that reset is what's triggering the events in this book.

A reset power counter. A Spawn who looks more like his original human self. And a future for the book that looks like this…

That's an awful lot of Spawns coming out of the woodwork. Especially when you also have to add Jessica Priest…
