The Voice Of The Hall, A New Graphic Novel By Sean Azzopardi, Funded By The British Arts Council
I've known Sean Azzopardi for decades. A mainstay voice of British small press, appearing at every comic show possible over here, he has resolutely ploughed a field of semi- autobiographical and slice-of-life comics for all that time. His work is clever, considered, poignant and pretty damn beautiful. And has resolutely never been picked up by any big publisher. His biggest comics "break" was probably a back-up strip with Kieron Gillen in Phonogram: The Singles Club.
I'm always happy to recommend his self-published graphic novella, Twelve Hour Shift about his work as an NHS porter.
And, yes, he's very much a British version of Harvey Pekar – albeit one with a far sunnier disposition. He also works as a photographer, and has been picked up for a little advertising, illustration, and storyboarding over the years. He's even written for Bleeding Cool.
Well, as he reaches his 50th birthday – and is working on a new project, 50, to commemorate it – he's entering a new phase.
Azzopardi has been awarded a grant from the British Arts Council to develop a graphic novel, titled The Voice Of The Hall about the history of Hornsey Town Hall, narrated by the building itself.
Turns out walls do have ears. We look forward to discovering more.
