Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch's Batman Goes Frank Miller Dark Knight

Today's Batman comic books from DC Comics make a number of references to Batman in the past. In Nightwing, we have the Joker back with a crowbar that looks very similar to the one that he used to kill another Robin, Jason Todd. While in Joker 80th Anniversary, Punchline has a poster from The Killing Joke on her college dorm room wall. But in The Batman's Grave #7, Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch pull out a Batmobile replacement for Batman to take to the street to quell the riots straight out of Dark Knight Returns. End of issue spoilers below, so be warned.

It does recall another skinhead-fighting version of the Batmobile from Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's The Dark Knight Returns.

Because it's a similarity that Ellis and Hitch want to make intentional, as Batman captures Sulphur, for a little interrogation to end the issue.

A pretty close quote to what the Batman will one day say in The Dark Knight Returns. As Batman approached his grave is he reprising his best lines?

Just remember, when it's Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, creators of The Authority, they are very much aware of the fascist overtones and undertones of the Batman, as they were with their own Authority series. So why not step into the similar territories explored by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson two-and-a-half decades ago.
