Welcome The London Legion Of Superheroes…
We've made comment on Bleeding Cool how the portrayal of London has changed in Wonder Woman, from the considered, nuanced and vaguely creepy version from Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang, to the It's-A-Jolly-Holiday Dick Van Dyke version from Meredith and David Finch.
Well, today's first issue of Harley's Little Black Book co-starring Wonder Woman sees Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner turn that up to eleven, with an even more ridiculous version. Except this one is deliberate. And they still get certain things rather accurate as well.
For example, Palmiotti and Conner know where Southwark is – home of Titan Comics, by the by.
Chasing a Mini with Union Flag livery across London Bridge looking like The Italian Job, spouting "gits" and "bloomin"…
"Knobs" – a Britishism for "dicks" and "barmy bugger", well that probably translates to "male sodomite." So, you know…So we have Tiffany Terror, Double Decker, Pub Crawler and Big Bad Ben…. and Camden to Battersea would be walkable in that time but you probably could get a bus, tube or train. "Her Majesty's", short for "Her Majesty's Pleasure", spending time in the cells.
And at least "copper" is more likely than "bobby"…
Tilbury docks even exist as well, out in Essex. Someone's been using Google maps. Of course the inevitable happens.
Wallop equals punch, pie hole equals mouth, daft cow means stupid woman. Sorry, but it gets worse…
Scrubber is a woman of loose virtue. I would now like to apologise for my nation.
This is all we'll be seeing of the London Legion for now. Though if they do make it to Gotham, Big Bad Ben does have plans….
I know Bruce Wayne has current wedding plans, but surely they could be suspended for a colleague?
Oh yes, Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman were in this comic as well…
