GDC: The Acer Mixed Reality Headset Now In Developer's Hands
Another piece of news to trickle out of the GDC, Microsoft has officially started giving game developers this snazzy little headset for the future of their VR gaming. This is the Acer Mixed Reality Headset, which Microsoft was happy to show off to the crowd this week, featuring two screens at 1440×1440 px, a native 90Hz refresh rate, a built-in audio system with headphone jack, and a design that actually looks a lot less bulky than the PSVR. Not shown are any kind of controller setup for your hands, which means the controls for this may still be in development for their design but the headset was ready to roll.
Another feature is that there's no requirement for built-in tracking, so now you have more freedom to move about with no external tracking in the room. Microsoft also hinted that setup would be a breeze, so hopefully, this is a versatile plug-and-play system that adapts immediately and doesn't require needless testing of where your vision lies. As far as the presentation went, the company handed everyone in attendance a "golden ticket" that assured them a free development kit. It was also briefly hinted at that the system may be ready in time to go with "Project Scorpio," but we'll probably have to wait until June to get any confirmation for that.
