Bleeding Cool Game Awards 2017: Best Strategy Game
For Bleeding Cool's Best Strategy Game of 2017, our three esteemed games judges were asked to weigh in on the best of the strategy game market to determine which was the absolute best strategy game of the year. It was a pretty stiff competition that mostly came down to two games, Total War: Warhammer II and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
The nominees are:
- Endless Space 2
- Total War: Warhammer II
- Spellforce 3
- Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War III
- Halo Wars 2
- Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
The judges scores were:
Games | Madeline's Score | Patrick's Score | Gavin's Score | Total |
Endless Space 2 | 4 | 6 | 3 | 13 |
Total War: Warhammer II | 3 | 1 | 1 | 5 |
SpellForce 3 | 6 | 5 | 6 | 17 |
Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War III | 5 | 4 | 4 | 13 |
Halo Wars 2 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 10 |
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle | 1 | 2 | 2 | 5 |
There's just something so charming about a Total War game. There's an obvious attempt to make it feel like a tabletop strategy game, even when it isn't a Warhammer edition of Total War. Something about the game just feels like it was pieced together lovingly by hand. Meanwhile, Mario + Rabbids had all the slick stylings of an AAA game with a massive budget and coders to prove it. So with these two games tied, the indie love in our judges' hearts won out and handed Total War: Warhammer II the win. It was, after all, the number one pick of both Patrick Dane and Gavin Sheehan.
So, here's to you Creative Assembly and SEGA, you earned it.
