Cards Of Pokémon TCG: Paldea Evolved Part 52: Orthworm & Rookidee

Orthworm & Rookidee both feature on Illustration Rare cards in Pokémon TCG's second Scarlet & Violet-era set, Paldea Evolved.

With Sword & Shield officially concluded, the Scarlet & Violet era of the Pokémon TCG kicked off in March 2023 with a focus on the ninth generation of Pokémon games and the new region: Paldea. It all began with the Scarlet & Violet base set, which introduced major, lasting changes to the hobby. Now, the borders of the cards have become silver, matching the Japanese releases. Another major change is that now, each pack culminates in at least a holo-rare and two reverse holos. The major mechanic of this era is the lowercase ex, which features a double holographic pattern of a horizontal shine and a starry sparkle. Full Art exs now use a green, foil outline around the Pokémon. The Secret Rare section of expansions going forward features Full Arts, Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rare exs, Full Art Trainers, Special Illustration Rare Trainers, and Gold Hyper Rares. On June 9, 2023, the Pokémon TCG released the second set of this era, Scarlet & Violet – Paldea Evolved, which focused on the Paldean Starters and the Treasures of Ruin Legendaries. In today's installment of this Scarlet & Violet – Paldea Evolved art spotlight, let's take a look at more Illustration Rares.

Orthworm is a new Steel-type species introduced in Scarlet & Violet. Here are its Dex entries:

When attacked, this Pokémon will wield the tendrils on its body like fists and pelt the opponent with a storm of punches.

This Pokémon lives in arid deserts. It maintains its metal body by consuming iron from the soil.

Orthworm's Illustration Rare is drawn by OKACHEKE, who has been with the hobby since Sword & Shield – Chilling Reign. OKACHEKE is best known for the SWSH Black Star Promo Flareon VMAX Alt Art, Alcremie Character Rare from Sword & Shield – Brilliant Stars, and Penny Special Illustration Rare from Scarlet & Violet.

Rookidee is a species introduced in the Sword & Shield era. It evolves into Corvisquire, which then evolves into the family's ultimate form, the popular species Corviknight. This Illustration Rare is the first Rookidee Secret Rare ever printed. The artist responsible for this image of a group of Rookidee at feeding time is named GOSSAN. GOSSAN has been contributing to the hobby since Sword & Shield – Brilliant Stars. Cards you may know by Gossan include Mightyena Character Rare from Sword & Shield – Astral Radiance, Galarian Perrserker V Alt Art from Sword & Shield – Lost Origin, and Mewtwo VSTAR Special Illustration Rare from Crown Zenith.
