Days Gone Voice Actor Filipe Duarte Has Passed Away

Filipe Duarte, the voice who brought Days Gone's Deacon St. John to life in the Portuguese version of the game, has passed away. The actor died at 46 on Friday (April 17) due to a heart attack, but there were no additional tidbits given about the circumstances surrounding his death.

"Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Portuguese actor Filipe Duarte," wrote Eric Jensen, Lead Open World Designer at Bend Studio on Days Gone. "He was the voice of Deacon for us and so many #DaysGone players in Portugal. Sending love to his family during this hard time. ❤️🙏"

Duarte also appeared in several Portuguese films, TV shows, and theater roles in Portugal. He was well-known as a soap opera actor and regular on Portuguese TV, even having been nominated for quite a few Portuguese Golden Globes and CinEuphoria Awards, including the 2015 Portuguese Golden Globe for Best Actor for the show Invisible Life. Days Gone is a PlayStation 4 exclusive that takes place in post-apocalyptic Oregon two years after a global pandemic strikes. Deacon St. John is an outlaw who finds out that his wife Sarah, long thought to be dead, could actually be alive. Deacon sets off on a journey to potentially find her while avoiding the effects of the pandemic – beings known as "Freakers."

Duarte's death comes days after Paul Haddad, the original voice actor for Leon in the PlayStation version of Resident Evil 2, passed away from throat cancer at 56. Daymare: 1998 developer Invader Studios shared the news on Twitter with a kind tribute to the actor.

"Paul Haddad, our dear friend and an icon among the RE community, has passed away recently. We've been truly honored to have the chance to meet and work with such a great man and a brilliant professional that He was," read the tweet. "Rest in Peace Paul… You will live forever in our hearts."

While there's currently a global pandemic happening, it seems a good time to go back and experience Days Gone with the American voice actor Sam Witwer as a way to pay tribute to Duarte passing. Rest in peace, Filipe, and thanks for your contributions to the gaming world.
