Epic Games Skips Google Play's Store for Direct Download of Fortnite
For those of you looking to get Fortnite on an Android device, Epic Games has made a decision to forego posting it on Google Play. The company has decided that anyone wishing to download their game for free can do so from a direct download on their website, as opposed to setting it up in the GP store. Epic's CEO, Tim Sweeney, explained the move was done specifically because of a financial decision to GamesIndustry.biz.
"The 30 percent store tax is a high cost in a world where game developers' 70 percent must cover all the cost of developing, operating, and supporting their games," Sweeney said. "There's a rationale for this on console where there's enormous investment in hardware, often sold below cost, and marketing campaigns in broad partnership with publishers. But on open platforms, 30 percent is disproportionate to the cost of the services these stores perform."
Sweeney didn't slam Google the way the company has slammed Apple in the past for being a closed-system that forces you to pay money to even get a listing in iTunes, but we can't really blame the company for wanting to save money on what is essentially a free game that isn't filled with 40 ads per minute.
