EVO 2020 Has Officially Been Canceled Due To COVID-19
Those who were hoping EVO 2020 would continue in August will be disappointed to hear that the event has been canceled. The company made the announcement on Twitter yesterday afternoon, in a series of tweets releasing the info in a few languages. Here's a small compilation of the major details they released to the public.
Due to COVID-19, we are dadly cancelling EVO 2020 at Mandalay Bay and refunding all purchased tickets. But to keep the spitir of EVO alive, we are bringing the event online this summer. More information coming soon! The Health and well-being of out community is out hishest priority. We hope everyone stays safe during this time. All arena tickets and hotel room reservations will be refunded automatically, there is no need to call in. We will have a form up next week for tournament registraiton.
The switch to an online format was pretty predictable, as it would probably kill the event entirely if they had to stop doing it altogether. With other tournaments and events moving into a digital format, it's pretty easy for them to continue to run an esports event through an online format. The two big questions at this point become first, who will still compete in the tournaments, and second, what games will remain and what will change. This year had a few major issues going for it that fans were not pleased with. Aside from the fact that Smash Bros. Melee players are still angry it's gone, Mortal Kombat 11 was shockingly not included in the list of major games at the event. Seemingly replaced with Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: Tournament Of Champions, which switching that to an online format now opens a new can of worms with fighting game purists as they'll now have to switch to a modded version of the game if they intend to follow through with that showcase.
Could MK11 be brought into the fold now? Or possibly a different game altogether? We'll be watching what EVO does over the next few weeks to see what they have planned to replace the August event.
