Getting a Glimpse of The Day We Fought Space at PAX East 2019
One of the smaller indie titles we got to check out at PAX East this year was an iOS game called The Day We Fought Space. This one comes to us from Tursiops Truncatus Studios, a two-woman studio headed up by designer Catherine Kimport and artist Susan Schaffer. This is a side-scrolling space shooter where you can choose from a plethora of different ships that all have different weapons and abilities for you to pick from as you will defend Earth from a number of invaders. Each ship comes with different defenses, speed, patterns for their weapons, etc. There's no right way to go about playing a particular level as you can beat it with any ship, but this game gives you incredible variety beyond just waiting for power-ups.
What I enjoyed most about this game was that it was controller friendly if you happen to hook one up to your mobile device. That, and the variety of levels that present different challenges you'll need to figure out and get used to. If this is your jam then you really need to try The Day We Fought Space. We didn't hear about a release window beyond "2019" when we tried the demo, but we can't wait to see it get released as this has the potential to be a top mobile title.
