Microsoft Controls Whether Alan Wake and Quantum Break Get Sequels, Says Remedy

Remedy has been out talking about its IPs, saying that it never made sequels to Alan Wake or Quantum Break because they are in the hands of Microsoft.

Alan Wake and, to some degree, Quantum Break have become cult-y favourites of many. Remedy Entertainment is well known for its single-player third-person narratively focused games, with both of those games laying the groundwork for the studio post-Max Payne. They both have their fans and many have wondered if and when we would be seeing them again.

Well, it seems that decision has little to do with Remedy. Talking to GamesIndustry.biz, CEO Tero Virtala revealed that both of those franchises lay in the hands of Microsoft. Talking about how it was important the company now own the rights to its latest franchise, Control, Virtala revealed that the studio has been somewhat disappointed not to be able to continue those franchises. He said:

We can create excellent games, but the type of games we do with an immersive world and characters, memorable stories – those are typically building blocks in any entertainment business for franchises that could live for a long time. And now for the second time being in a position where we had done all that groundwork and then there was not a possibility to continue those stories… we didn't want to face that again.

Further specifying on the two series for Remedy, he said:

Alan Wake was really interesting but it was a collaboration with Microsoft. Due to certain reasons, it never got a sequel. Quantum Break, also, we put a lot of effort into creating the world, the characters, the stories, but still it was Microsoft IP. They decided not to take it further. If we owned the IP, it's fully in our hands to decide how we create it, how we develop, what are the creative decisions that we take? And then maybe one day in the future, if it proves to be successful, it's again in our hands to decide what will be done.

This certainly is an interesting revelation. Microsoft has been hurting for exclusive games of late, and a sequel to either Alan Wake or Quantum Break could make sense. Alas, it seems, for whatever reason, it is not meant to be… yet. That said, Remedy has really impressed with footage of Control it has put out, so I think there is plenty of reason to be okay with how everything has shaken out.
