"Monsterpocalypse" Going Ape Over "King Kondo" (REVIEW)

[rwp_box_recap id="0"]

There are few things I love more on this earth than giant monsters. Give me a game where I can fight giant monsters against other giant monsters, and you will have my heart forever. So, imagine how much a goofball like me is going to flip out over a game like Monsterpocalypse, the kaiju-fighting-kaiju maniature game from the folks at Privateer Press.

I have already fallen head over heals for these minis, and have a couple of them already put together. But my favorite so far is King Kondo, the giant simian leader of the Empire of the Apes:

The arrival of the Destroyers has drawn the ire of many great beasts once hidden in the untracked jungles and wilderness places. One of the greatest of Earth's savage defenders is known as King Kondo, a primate of gargantuan proportions with a rage to match his height and girth. Kondo has the strength to punch through buildings or lift and throw entire trains. He has no reason to trust humanity, particularly after a disastrous attempt by a secret multi-national task force to take him captive and use him as a chained weapon, but most of his ire is reserved for unnatural horrors like the Planet Eaters.

King Kondo is one of the good guys, too- you can add him to your Protectors force, so if you want, Kondo can fight side by side with a cool giant lizard like Armodax.

Let's take a look inside the box:

Okay, you get the stat card, which you need to play Monsterpocalypse with. You also get King Kondo, which comes in four pieces: the main body, one arm, and two pewter chains.

Clean-up is pretty easy: wash the miniature in warm, soapy water, then let it dry. There are a few tabs around the main body and arm that you'll want to watch out for before you glue the figure together. The arm socket needed a little clean-up, but otherwise King Kondo comes together pretty quickly.

I painted King Kondo by base-coating him with a black primer, then adding a zenithal highlight with white primer. Then it was just a matter of applying a grey-blue glaze to his bare skin, and a charcoal grey glaze to his fur. Scars where picked out with a flesh tone, then highlighted white. His mouth was a dark pink glaze, with a follow up pass with white paint to pick out the teeth. The chains where silver paint, which were then glazed with a dark blue-grey wash afterwards.

All in all, King Kondo joins the other Monsterpocalypse figures I have put together in being easy to paint, but you'll get really rewarding results with just a little extra effort.

The only tough thing about these figures is painting them without putting them on their base first, which I try to avoid doing. The varnish I use to protect my paint jobs clouds clear acrylic, so I found myself holding the bare miniature a lot while painting, which can mess up the paint job.

Big shout out to my friend Chief Randle, who suggested fixing the figure down to a plain miniature base with blue-tack. I'll give that a shot next time around!

King Kondo is highly recommended to fans of giant monsters, big ole' gorillas, and fans of monster on monster mayhem.
