Old-School Racing Isn't Always The Best: A Quick Review Of 'Mantis Burn Racing'

Last October, VooFoo Studios released Mantis Burn Racing for the Xbox One and PS4, with some mixed reviews that thought the game was well made but kind of lacked a spark that other racing titles had. In September, the game finally made it's way to PC. This version of the game is essentially the console versions, but with all of the DLC included that people have been getting over the past year. The game stays true to the original with the top-down racing form that harkens back to the 8-bit era with a modern look and feel.

Much like those titles, Mantis Burn Racing follows the same pattern when you race around a track with basically only a handful of cars to choose from and your only main controls are the gas and the break. You're still stuck with limited locations to race in, but you still have a number of options in Season mode where you must complete challenges such as keeping first place for points, pulling off jumps, managing tracks, and, of course, time trials. Lots and lots of time trials.

The game is alright, but the sheer fact that VooFoo didn't bother to do anything new or special for this version makes it feel like too little too late. It should have just been released at the same time as the console version and I don't understand why there was nearly a year-long delay to get it out on PC. If you're looking for a challenge with a bit of an old-school touch, you might dig this take on the racing genre.
