Quantum Break Developer Says They Are Focusing More On 'Game Mechanics' In The Future
Quantum Break was a pretty divisive game all told. Some really like it, some (including myself) were pretty let down. It was a bold experiment, but mixing a TV show with gameplay was quite often maligned in negative reviews.
It seems Remedy Entertainment have heard too. In a new tweet by Head of Communications at the developer, Thomas Puha hinted that the developer's focus going forward will likely be much more focused on the game side of things. He said:
This was alongside an interview with Polygon, where game director Mikael Kasurinen talked about why he thought Quantum Break struggled. He said:
Quantum Break was a game we had to do. We were dabbling with these ideas Quantum Break had quite awhile. We always wanted to see where it could go. Digital doubles, the TV show medium in the gaming. We always saw hints of that in Alan Wake. QB to me was … it kind of had to happen.
What we learned was, it's challenging to combine this more passive way of telling stories with a game that demands you to be active and Quantum Break underlined those problems really clearly. We wanted, we felt it was exploration worth doing. We spent a lot of time making sure the connection points between the TV show and the game were strong and meaningful. It is a tough challenge to make people shift back and forth between active and passive mode
This is frank and interesting. It doesn't rule out the developer doing video stuff in the future, and the studio has a long running history with live action content, but for now, it seems gameplay is where the efforts are headed. Read into that what you will about a possibile Quantum Break 2.
