Sony Killing A Ton Of PlayStation Services With Latest Update

If you're one of the many gamers clinging to your PS3 because Sony hasn't let you down yet… You're about to be very let down.

Yesterday the company announced that several devices would be losing service updates, effective on August 15, 2017. Included in the mass cease of operations is the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation TV, Sony Bravia TVs made between 2013-2015, all Samsung TV models and finally, really puzzling, the service will also discontinue for all Sony Blu-ray players. The short version is that you have just under six months to enjoy PlayStation Now on those devices and find an alternative if you continue enjoying them. Right now it appears owning a PS4 or watching it on Windows are your only real options moving forward as Sony focuses their efforts on the current system.

If you're a long-time Sony user, the move should come as no surprise as the company made the same maneuvers with the PS2 and all of it's online services 18 months after the PS3 was released. The real surprise to the update is that all of their Blu-ray players will no longer have the service. Considering how successful the company has been over the years by cornering that end of the market, you'd think they'd continue to keep their customers happy and not have them wander off to get a cheaper player. But if the endgame to all these changes is to have people purchase PS4s and incorporate everything into one single entertainment system, you can't really blame Sony for the changes.
