Some interesting news for fass of Super Mario Bros. Wonder as the game almost had a mechanic added to the game for Yoshi's that would have changed a few things. When Nintendo released the game and we got a look at all of the different mechanics and power-ups they added, it was already an amazing title that was a bit off the wall. They basically mixed together stuff you would expect to see in a Kaizo ROM hack with a wishlist of things people have said they wished was in a Mario game for years. But at one point in development, the game could have actually received a mechanic from the past that would have made Yoshi a little more dynamic and probably changed the game up in a few ways in the process.
Nintendo Eeverything recently translated an interview from Famitsu, in which they chatted with the game's director, Shiro Mouri, about the development of the game. Apparently, at one point, it was discussed to have all of the Yoshi's throw eggs like they did in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Which meant instead of just eating enemies or spitting them out, players would have had the option to make them eggs to later use as ammo. The team was so on board with making this, they created a prototype of the mechanic to test it out in the game. However, according to Mouri, the mechanic "became hard to control, and to let first-time-players have fun, we decided the current way was the best."
Its an interesting look into the game's development and what could have been if the team truly decided to take things in that direction. But hey, there's always the chance to make Super Mario Bros. Wonder 2 somewhere down the road, so maybe it might have a chance to come back.
