You May Have To Pay For Certain 4K HDR Game Patches On PlayStation Consoles
So this is a weird new caveat for the PlayStation Pro, and even the original PlayStation 4.
It seems you might have to pay for upgraded 4K HDR visuals for some games getting brought up to the system's specs. Talking to Game Impress Watch, (via Kotaku) Sony's Masayasu Ito hinted that the the possibility of paid patches is indeed real.
When asked if people would have to pay for HDR patches, which are coming to PlayStation 4 as well, he said:
It will be different for each title. I believe it will depend on the thinking of each licensee.
There he is talking about third parties making that choice, but when asked about 3rd party games, he said:
I think it will vary for each one of our titles
That is a pretty wild move if Sony go through with it. I don't think too many are going to be happy to be paying for patches for games, even those made to utilise your tech. It feels like a punishment for wanting to use your HDR TV to me. It's true that that money for devs to work on this content has to come from somewhere, but it's almost certainly going to be a hard sell to convince players they should be the ones footing the bill after already buying a game though.
