A Bleeding Cool Correction: Putting All The Pieces Together On The Marvel Daredevil Wristband Signing Incident

daredevil-concept-art-109118On October 11th, we ran a story that was sent to us by one of our reporters on site at the New York Comic Con. It was his take of what transpired at the Marvel booth during the line-up for wristbands allowing entrance to the Daredevil Cast signing. Included in the report was a video he took with his phone. We reported on the incident from the facts as they were presented to us by an eyewitness.

Since the incident, Michael D'Alessio has taken to his Facebook page and broke down the incident from the Marvel staff perspective. Marvel had announced that there would be no line-ups for the wristbands prior to 10:00 to be fair to all attendees. A crowd formed prior to that and the staff attempted to disperse them. The crowd did not move and at the time the giveaway was to begin, the crowd was 12 people wide instead of the requested single file. All attempts to organize the crowd failed and to prevent anyone from getting injured, the giveaway was postponed for fifteen minutes and would resume if a single file line was created.

The crowd did not react well to this, there was cursing and yelling and security was brought in to help disperse the crowd. Once order was restored, the giveaway resumed. D'Alessio also stressed that the actually signing was never canceled or threatened to be cancelled.

The story we ran was not the only report from the incident we received. A second one that corroborated the first came in, but it was much more inflammatory in its description of how Marvel handled the incident. We went with the more factual take on the story and yes, we made a mistake. Not in the covering the story, but a piece of the information we got was wrong. We were told it was the actual signing that was suspended when it was in fact the giving away of the wristbands for the signing. The rest of our report was accurate and does not conflict with D'Alessio's description of how the incident was handled.

We applaud D'Alessio and the Marvel Staff for the manner in which they handled a very tenuous situation.
