Aquaman Director James Wan Was Given the Opportunity to Direct The Flash
People were a little surprised when DC and Warner Bros. announced that James Wan, mostly known for his work in horror movies, was going to direct Aquaman. It seemed like an interesting choice and one that is [so far] working out for them. It turns out that Wan wasn't just offered the directing chair for Aquaman but he had a choice between Aquaman and The Flash according to Den of Geek.
"It was two characters; it was Aquaman and The Flash. I think the Flash is a really cool character," Wan says, "But the reason why, ultimately, I picked Aquaman is that he had never been done on the big screen or the small screen before. At least, not to this level. I think there was The Man From Atlantis, the Patrick Duffy film. But that's not really an Aquaman story."
For Wan the choice came down to the fact that he could create his own world, Atlantis, with Aquaman but there were a lot more limitations with The Flash.
"I picked Aquaman because I felt like he was very unique. I've never seen him before. And also it allowed me to do my world creation film. The Flash lives more in the real world while Aquaman just lives in this world that I can just create from the ground up.
"
Aquaman also presented Wan with the opportunity to explore genre a bit more. The superhero can be so much more than just mindless action and Wan wanted to create an adventure film.
"I did not want to make a traditional superhero film," Wan says. "I did not want to make a movie that felt that way. I wanted to make an adventure, a fantasy film, not dissimilar to Lord of the Rings or Star Wars."
Wan would have made an interesting choice for The Flash and seeing his versions of some of the meta-humans that Barry fights would be fun but it sounds like Aquaman was the right fit for him. Aquaman is off to a solid start with a $200+ million worldwide box office and is set to open in North American this weekend.
Summary: Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and to be a hero to the world.
Aquaman is directed by James Wan, stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, and will hit theaters on December 21st.
