Avengers: Infinity War – Iron Man's Team and the End of the World

In Avengers: Infinity War, they're bringing in nearly 70 characters spanning ten years worth of movies on the big screen together for the first time. If Avengers in 2012 was the beginning of something new, Avengers: Infinity War is the moment where we see if Marvel can stick the landing. As we know, the Avengers are currently divided. At the moment we haven't recently seen all of them together. Captain America has taken his team to Wakanda, while Iron Man seems to be in New York. That means he's currently with Doctor Strange and Wong. Entertainment Weekly spoke to Robert Downey Jr. about his team and where they stand.

I love how Cumberbatch just comes in and kind of draws flaming circles anywhere and can basically step into your movie. That's fun. And we wanted to keep a little bit of the Science Bros thing alive, even though Ruffalo has been on such an amazing Banner/Hulk journey himself. I really, really, really enjoyed getting to know and work with and play around with Benedict as Strange. Benedict Wong also, by the way is fantastic.

Spider-Man has also been shown to be around New York City and may be the first person who interacts with the big circular ship in the sky. Peter is very clearly Team Iron Man, and Downey Jr. knows that Marvel is playing to their strengths.

I think [Marvel] is smart: "Oh yeah, we like the Parker/Stark thing." So let's keep them at close quarters as long as we can. Someone under your tutelage is now firing on all cylinders, but you're responsible for bringing them into deeper water. We knew that would be fruitful.

When it comes to the threat of Thanos, Downey Jr. did not mince his words. This is a level of event that even the Avengers haven't faced before.

Believe me, I'm tired of every movie, you know, "It's the end! It's Armageddon! It's the Be All, End All, Forever!" And then it's … not. This one actually is. [Laughs] They're not kidding. This is a heads-will-roll scenario.

Everyone likes to say that Downey Jr. is Tony Stark, and it's been a running joke in the franchise ever since. However, when asked about how much of himself he put into the character, he brushes it off.

I wonder. [Pause.] I ain't him, I'll tell you that flat out. There's always a bit of a burn off period when they run out of call sheets for me. I'm just a f—ing actor. I'm just a guy who does have a very interesting past, who does not regret it, who wished to shut the door on it. I think that that translates.

When asked if he'd like Iron Man to be part of his career in twenty years Downey Jr. revealed that he's a guy who wants to retire a part before it becomes a joke.

I'm definitely a hang up your jersey before they boo you off the court type guy, just because I still have an appropriate fear of embarrassment.

So it sounds like Downey Jr. is on his way out the door, but twenty years down the line is a long time. We can assume that Harrison Ford didn't think he'd be playing Han Solo or Indiana Jones again yet both of those are happening. So who knows what will happen, but we shouldn't be surprised if Iron Man hangs up the suit in the next two movies.

Summary: As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
