Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, And Oscar Isaac Go Behind The Scenes Of The Last Jedi At D23
Today at D23, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson debuted a new behind the scenes reel about the making of The Last Jedi. Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac all make appearances in the clip, which discusses the creative process behind the eagerly-awaited sequels to everyone's favorite sci-fi franchise. The mood is excited but somber, with the director saying at one point that the film may seem "shocking" when audiences finally see it.
The behind-the-scenes footage debuted today is part of the incredibly well planned promotional strategy that Disney has perfected with both The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Both of those films received a trailer and then followed that hype up with making-of footage to bring fans an "inside scoop" that wasn't really a scoop at all. The difference this time around is timing.
For The Force Awakens, the behind-the-scenes clip premiered during the film's presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, but this year, Lucasfilm and Disney are using D23 to deliver the majority of their Star Wars updates. And, I'm actually a bit shocked it took them this long. D23 is Disney's own convention, which makes it a much better venue for Disney and Lucasfilm to control their own announcements. It also keeps all the money nice and in-house.
Much like with The Force Awakens, plot details of The Last Jedi have been kept remarkably quiet thus far, and the new clip does nothing to change that. Judging by past precedent however, a new trailer will be coming in the next few months. Star Wars: The Last Jedi itself will arrive in theaters on December 15th.
