Fox Is Working On A Logan Spinoff Movie Starring Laura, AKA X-23
Someone at 20th Century Fox is starting to pay attention. Now that Wonder Woman made a ton of money for Warner Bros and Logan is being touted as a Oscar contender, we finally have confirmation that a Laura (X-23) spinoff movie staring Dafne Keen is in the works.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director James Mangold, producer Hutch Parker, and star Hugh Jackman talk about closing one chapter on the character of Wolverine and starting a new one. Mangold said:
"Patty's success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there's less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, 'Well here we are with a female protagonist. That's incredible. And what are we going to do with her?' And that's where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming."
It's not just Wonder Woman doing well that's giving Fox the push to give Laura her own movie — it's also the willingness to explore different genres. This Laura movie could be totally different from Logan, and that seems likely. Parker said:
"Yes, there are other facets of that character and some others potentially to explore in their own way. It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan, but I think part of what has been opened up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe."
As for Jackman, when he said he was hanging up the claws, he meant in all aspects of the character. He has no inclination to be involved in this Laura movie. He said:
"No, I won't be a producer on a Laura sequel. But I will be lining up on the Thursday night at 10 pm to watch it though. She is just phenomenal."
