And John Barrowman Makes Three – Legends Of Tomorrow Winter Finale

The image above features John Barrowman, Neal McDonough and Matt Letscher appearing together for the first time as Malcolm Merlyn, Damien Darhk and Eobard Thawne. This is the Legion of Doom so far heading into the winter hiatus and they already seem more than a match for the Legends without bringing in their expected fourth member. Though he's not part of the bad guys yet, we did get to see the return of Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart.

But getting into this episode, there are two ways to look at the Legends team. The first is a group of misfits that can't figure out a plan or take the time to properly brief the member before running in and making a mess. The other is a a family that regardless of the individuals, stands together when threatened. The team is both and that's what tonight's episode highlighted… that and that the bad guys are MUCH better at planning.

The team gets word of a time anomaly in 1927 Chicago and head there to take a look… after convincing Mick Rory that there would in fact be alcohol even during prohibition. They arrive to find Eliot Ness has just reached Chicago and is likely the target of the anomaly. Ray Palmer tries to stop him, but two police men show up to escort him to the FBI office. Nate Heywood yells at Palmer for letting Ness go with the cops since most of the cops at this time are in Al Capone's pocket. Martin Stein is the last chance to stop Ness, but he gets memory flashes of his daughter just as Sara Lance was telling him to stop Ness and didn't hear her. So once again the team has completely bumbled a mission.

They are able to figure out where Ness is taken to and rescue him, but he was in the water for two long and the Waverider med-bay can fix his brain damage but it will take time, leaving it up to the Legends to do what Ness would've been doing that week… finding Capone's ledger that would eventually lead to his downfall.

This whole trip to 1927 Chicago is a trap set by Merlyn to get the amulet Thawne wants from the team. So when they impersonate Ness and take the FBI to raid the speakeasy, Reverse-Flash races in and kidnaps Sara and Stein. Merlyn then offers to change the past, keeping Sara from getting onto the Queen's Gambit and giving her a normal life and saving Laurel Lance at the same time, in exchange for the amulet. Sara declines so they take Stein to be tortured… except fans of the Flash will recognize the device Thawne is going to use as the same one he used to make himself look like Harrison Wells… except this time on a lower setting so it doesn't kill Stein.

Then when Rory leads the crew in for a rescue, grab Sara and Stein and head back to the ship, they're actually taking Thawne. Jefferson Jackson figures out that it's not Stein and there is a fight. Seems Rip Hunter had a gun in the arsenal to stop speedsters, that comes into play. Rory and Amaya Jiwe work together to take on Thawne since he killed Rex Tyler. Sara goes one on one with Merlyn leaving Nate and Ray with taking care of the gangsters with Tommy Guns. Sara beats Merlyn, but ends up exchanging the amulet for where Stein is and she gets there in time to save him before being tossed off the pier with cement shoes.

At the end we learn that the two amulets go together to make a compass that will lead the LoD to the famed Spear of Destiny.

The three other things that happened in the episode that are important. While they are being held, Stein tells Sara about his daughter, and she decides that it's an anomaly they don't need to fix. Rory and Amaya seems to be getting closer, becoming friends… maybe more. Oh, and Rory is now seeing hallucinations of Snart that taunts him to go back to his evil ways. Talking about how sacrificing yourself for your friends is not all it's cracked up to be. How this will play out when he returns in the flesh will be interesting to see.

I like the family aspect of the team, but I'm getting a little tired of the bumbling aspect which seems to be in even more play since Rip Hunter left the team. I'd really like to see that toned down a bit. The crew is filled with smart and experienced individuals who should be getting better and learning from their mistakes.

Oh, and speaking of Rip Hunter… we see where he is. Turns out he's a 1970's film director making a movie about Captain Rip Hunter. Didn't see that coming.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow will return on January 24th at 9 PM. This is there new night and time following the Flash for the remainder of the season.
