Joystiq Might Be On The Brink Of Closing
It's important for the games media to have a several major outlets. On one hand it creates competition to drive better work. On the other, each site is different from the last, bringing a new flavour to the reportage realm.
That is why I'm saddened by the news that Joystiq look like they may be on the brink of closing. Recode reported that AOL are looking to cut "underperforming content properties" and its premier gaming website may be on the chopping block. More closures are forthcoming too.
Joystiq responded to the rumours in the best way they could by putting out their report on the report that they are closing. They jokingly said:
We do not comment on rumor and speculation, one staffer told us, wishing to remain anonymous, preparing for their lucrative PR career. Others are still trying to figure out next steps. Another anonymous staffer said, "We're still working until we can't.
The site has a great team with a unique voice, not afraid to put a little humour into their news stories. A special brand of writing will fall if the reports hold true.
We're hoping for the best for all those affected.
