Legends of Tomorrow Season 3, Episode 17 Recap: Guest Starring John Noble

So much craziness happened in this episode. We find out that the team has codes to describe various things that could go wrong, and Ray (Brandon Routh) has made a song out of it. Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) is off to save her tribe and change time, while Mallus has sent Grodd to 1979 to kill a young Barack Obama (Lovell Adams-Gray). The team splits, Nate (Nick Zano) and Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) go to help/stop Amaya, Zari (Tala Ashe) looks for a way Amaya could save her tribe, while Sara (Caity Lotz), Rip (Arthur Darvill), Ava (Jess Macallan), Ray and Mick (Dominic Purcell) go to help the future president. Mallus, in the body of Nora Darhk (Courtney Ford) is in the process of transforming when the Legends stop Grodd… by shrinking him and then putting him in a mason jar. Angry, Mallus sends Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) to finish what Grodd started, but upon his arrival, he finds Sara and Rip and tells them he needs their help to save his daughter.

With the Zambezi tribe, Nate and Wally find Amaya, but she refuses to stop. They then witness a ceremony where an older Amaya is supposed to give the totem to her daughter, Esi (Erika Tazel), but she refuses. She lacks the confidence to step up. Back on the ship they use a containment spell from Constantine to hold Darhk as he makes his case for working together and gives them the water totem. Sara wants to kill him but the others think he might be able to help. She goes to young Barack for advice, who suggests the Legends should handle Mallus in their unorthodox way. They come up with a way to trap Mallus thanks to Mick being obsessed with watching Lord of the Rings. They hear John Noble playing Denethor and realize it's a very similar voice to Mallus. Ray goes to the filming of LotR and gets John Noble to read a series of lines, saying they're script changes, and record them. Then when Damien goes back because he failed to kill Obama, Ray flies into Nora's ear and plays the recording making her think she's getting orders from Mallus. They go to the Waverider and capture her in the containment spell from earlier.

Younger Amaya convinces Esi to take the totem while Nate meets older Amaya and finds out she has no memory of him. Zari can find no loop hole to save the tribe, so Sara comes up with a plan for them to let Amaya save the tribe, to create another anachronism and set Mallus free so they can then fight him with the six totems. She gives Damien the death totem, Nate gets Earth and Ray gets water. Ava refuses to go along with the plan and leaves, even after Sara confessed her love. Before they go, Nora appears to Damien in a vision, saying she doesn't want to become Mallus. Damien then gets Grodd from the Jar. Once Esi chases off the warlords, it doesn't change time because Grodd destroys the village instead. Nate runs to help, tapping into the Earth totem. Damien takes on the others with the added strength of the death totem. He then has Nora run. Sara stabs Damien in the back and they take back the death totem, but it's too late as Nora full transforms int Mallus… a giant winged demon. And he flies off. Setting us up for the big showdown next week.

The John Noble part was great as was the portrayal of Obama. Damien had some surprisingly emotional moments that really worked. But I have so many questions about Grodd. Why would his mental abilities not work even at a shrunken size? And how did Damien restore him to normal size? Ray didn't tap into the water totem's powers, it might be there hadn't been a selfless act yet or maybe he can't, which means who can? And it seems my guess that Mallus' true form was that of Beebo turned out to be wrong. I am disappointed.

Next week is the season finale that brings back Jonah Hex (Johnathon Schaech), John Constantine (Matt Ryan) and Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh). And, of course, there is the big news that came down yesterday. The CW has renewed all of the superhero shows, meaning that the Legends will be back for a fourth season with Ryan as a regular.
