After two films, Disney recently shifted gears and turned their National Treasure films into a Disney+ series, offering a reimagining of the popular franchise. However, there's always been a lot of love for the previously released films in the early '00s, with many hoping that a third film would eventually come to fruition. As it turns out, one of the film's stars had a very similar sentiment despite little interest from the studio.
Nicolas Cage on Why He Enjoyed Making the National Treasure Films
During a conversation with Deadline, National Treasure star Nicolas Cage shared his affinity for the popular Disney film series, telling the site, "Yeah, well, they're a lot of fun. I mean, I enjoy [the National Treasure films] too, and I think Jon Turteltaub made a couple of classic films for the whole family. I'm still kind of amazed that Disney hasn't wanted to make a third one. I thought the movies brought a lot of joy to the public, and it's certainly interesting about history, and I think all of that is worthwhile filmmaking. You can dig deep and go into the more abstract stuff, like Bringing out the Dead, or Pig, or even Dream Scenario, or you can open it up and make a movie that pleases a lot of people and hopefully gives families a chance to escape a little bit from whatever may be going on at home or in the office. I think they're all valid."
In 2022, producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared his optimism about the chance of seeing another National Treasure film, teasing, "We're working on the script right now. Hopefully, [Cage] likes it, but it's really good. So I think we'll get it to him shortly." But considering it's 2024 and Cage doesn't have a positive update, it's safe to assume there are no active plans for a third installment.
