Dexter Fletcher was tempted to cast Oscar-winner Rami Malek to reprise his role as Freddie Mercury from Bohemian Rhapsody for the Elton John biopic, Rocketman.

Fletcher, who took over Bohemian Rhapsody directing duties following Bryan Singer's firing, opted against the casting for the cameo in the Taron Egerton-starred film he told Gay Star News.

"There was an idea I had one point, where Elton's in a restaurant with his mother. I thought John Reid and Freddie could be at another table and they wave at each other! That would have been amazing, but it didn't come to pass. It would been a little too knowing…I'm not looking to set out to make a cinematic universe."

Reid served as manager to John and Queen at the height of their careers. Aiden Gillen played him in Bohemian Rhapsody and Richard Madden in Rocketman. Both are HBO's Game of Thrones alums.

If Fletcher were to do another biopic, he said he has his sights on Madonna.

"That sounds like a real rollercoaster ride! If I was to tackle any other icon like that, it wuld be her. She's extraordinary."

The film also stars Jamie Bell and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Rocketman is currently in theaters.
