Sony Were Surprised By The Success Of Bloodborne
Bloodborne has done very well considering the game has a strong focus on the hardcore. The game passed 1 million sold two weeks after launch and has been a mainstay on top seller lists since.
That's great for a Souls game, and the success even took Sony by surprise. Talking to MCV, Sony boss Feral Gara said:
It did surprise us. We had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did – and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative.
I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us. We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximise its potential.
It's great to see Bloodborne out and getting high sales numbers. There aren't many games like it, so perhaps this might encourage AAA developers to try new things and understand that there is a mass market for challenging games.
