Super Mario 64 Is Being Remade By Fans – For Now
Super Mario 64 really was one of those 'wow' moments in gaming. The jump into 64-pixels and a 3D environment was a real landmark for Mario and all of video games. It really is one of the finest examples of 3D platforming available even to this day. I know I'm not alone in that love for the title either.
Here is a scary fact too. That games is going to be 19 this year. Wow.
Anyhow, surprisingly Nintendo have never really touched the game. There was a 3DS remix, but you can't even buy the title on the Wii U right now. That is silly. It doesn't look like Nintendo will be touching the game for a little bit either. Maybe a total re-do for the 20th anniversary, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
To fill that void, a couple fans have stepped in. On Facebook, it has been revealed a few fans are trying to completely re-do the game on their own. The results so far? It seems a bit rough, but the work here is genuinely impressive. Have a look:

My worry for this project is Nintendo themselves. While the developers are saying that this project is completely for non-profit, Nintendo have known to be pretty protective of their toys in the past. They've been known to make mass Youtube copyright claims on anything containing their material, even the content they give to people for promotional purposes.
I fear for this project in the long term, but it really would be totally awesome if Nintendo let it slide. I'd love to see what these guys do.
