The Messengers Debut Fails To Take Flight
Friday night may not be the best time to put a thriller focused on Angels and Demons… and I'm not talking about Constantine. Last night the CW debuted its new series The Messengers to what may be the networks lowest numbers for a scripted series debut since the Cult. The 1.18 million / 0.3 rating is definitely not a good start, but hurting it is the lead in series that also made its debut: Cedric's Barber Battle which only pulled in 830,000 viewers and a 0.2 rating. The night started with the return of Whose Line Is It Anyway that brought in a 0.4 in the demographic. That means that around half the people who turned in for the long-running improv show, ran away from the Barber Battle, and some came back for The Messengers.
The network had been running hot this year, giving early renewals to all of the fall series and the spring series like iZombie doing well… this is quite the bump in the road. It will be interesting to see how the network reacts or if they will assume the numbers are down because of the Hockey playoffs and let things continue as is. Now we see why the CW is already planing an Arrow / The Flash spinoff.
