Thor: Ragnarok – Odin Was Doing Way More To Keep The Universe Safe Than We Thought
There's a moment, when you really become an adult, and you realize just how many plates your parents kept spinning without you even realizing it. It appears that this is true for Thor's family over on Asgard but instead of paying bills it as on a cosmic scales. When IGN visited the set of Thor: Ragnarok they found out that Odin was doing way more to keep everyone safe than Thor or Loki knew.
[Producer Brad] Winderbaum explained that "what Thor comes to learn early on is that there's a lot of terrible things in the cosmos that just shouldn't be that way. And we learn that Odin was doing far more than it seemed on the surface to keep the universe safe. That there were all these threats that he had quelled or was keeping at bay, using his strength and power to do so, that Loki was completely unaware, unprepared for."
So Loki took over the throne of Asgard and, we learn, that he has banished Odin down to Earth. However, he was completely unprepared for the sheer scope of the job that he just took on.
Winderbaum also said that while the trickster god "achieved his goals" in finally winning the throne, it proves a bittersweet victory for Loki: "So he becomes the King of Asgard, everything is great, it's a good party, but he failed to realize the threats that were just over the horizon, Hela being the biggest and most terrible one of all."
It puts Loki and Thor in the position of being college students that are out on their own, with real responsibilities for the first time, and getting completely overwhelmed. It's a funny place to find two people we are told are gods but it makes for an interesting dynamic. They need to sit down in the kitchen with their dad and get a stern lecture on the importance of responsibility.
Summary: Imprisoned, the mighty Thor finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home and the Asgardian civilization.
Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi, stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Idris Elba, and Mark Ruffalo. It will be released on November 3rd.
