Undiscovered Country Sold For Over A Million Dollars to New Republic Pictures – Will Scott and Charles Be Buying Everyone Drinks at New York Comic Con?
ScreenDaily got the PR regarding the sale of Scott Snyder, Charles Soule, Guiseppe Camunco, Daniele Orlandini and Matt Wilson's upcoming comic book from Image Comics, Undiscovered Country, to Brian Oliver's New Republic Pictures for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, in a competitive bidding situation, with plans for a potential franchise. The first issue will ship on November 6th, but an ashcan version was shown off and given away at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, where it was announced.
In the special oversized first issue, readers will journey into the near future, and an unknown nation that was once the United States of America-a land that's become shrouded in mystery after walling itself off from the rest of the world without explanation over thirty years ago. When a team seeking a cure for a global pandemic breaches U.S. borders, they quickly find themselves in a struggle to survive this strange and deadly lost continent.
Snyder and Soule are attached to adapt the screenplay and serve as executive producers alongside Camuncoli. John Hilary Shepherd will oversee development for New Republic.
I asked Scott if the drinks would be on him and Charles come the late-night evenings of New York Comic Con in a few weeks, He told me "we'll certainly try and at least toast with as many (of age) fans as possible to say thank you!"
What a responsible comic book creator – and now screenwriter – he is. Of course, the film has to go into production and get made before all that money comes through… but it's still a very good position to be in.
Snyder also has American Vampire set up at Warner Bros, Wytches at Plan B and New Regency, and After Death at Sony, while Soule's first novel The Oracle Year is in development as a TV series at TNT.
Angela Cheng Caplan, Jack Mahan and Eric Feig negotiated the Undiscovered Country deal on behalf of Snyder, Soule and Camuncoli, with Michael Moskowitz of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips on behalf of New Republic. They all sound very important people.
Here's a preview of the comic book…
