Warner Bros Already Has Two Backups In Case Matt Reeves Won't Direct The Batman: Ridley Scott And Fede Alvarez
Warner Bros has learned its lesson from the long and arduous will-he-won't-he saga of Ben Affleck directing The Batman. Though Affleck announced last month that he would not direct the project after months of wishy washy comments saying he would only direct it if the script was good, the studio has already reportedly offered the movie to Cloverfield director Matt Reeves. However, according to a report from LRM, they're keeping two additional directors in the wings just in case Reeves, like Affleck, realizes that he's made a grave mistake and drops out of the project.
One of those backup directors is Ridley Scott, director of films such as Blade Runner and the Aliens franchise. While a director of Scott's caliber might be insulted to be the second or third choice to direct a Batman movie, it turns out Batman isn't Scott's first choice either; he recently admitted that he had no interest in directing a superhero film, saying, "I can't believe in the thin, gossamer tight-rope of the non-reality of the situation of the superhero." That being said, Scott did hedge his bets a little bit, saying that Batman could easily fit into the world of Blade Runner.
Fede Alvarez, who directed 2013's Evil Dead remake, is the other director in line to pick up the torch if Matt Reeves doesn't work out. Of course, Warner Bros should probably start looking for backups for their backups. You can never be too careful in the superhero movie business.
