Weekend Box Office: '1917' Dethrones 'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker'
1917 has done it. The new Sam Mendes war film, riding high after taking Best Director and Best Motion Picture-Drama at last Sunday's Golden Globes, won the weekend box office. The film took in $37.2 million, and while always on track to do well, it for sure saw a boost from the awards attention. 1917 also took in a total of $56 million worldwide, making it the number 1 film in the entire world. Look for it to continue that momentum next weekend after tomorrow's Academy Awards nominations are announced, where it is expected to receive a few nominations.
The champ for the last few weeks, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker slips to number 2. Adding another $15.3 million, the film is slowing down a little quicker than most expected, especially since winter break is now over in the US. While still a huge success, It is starting to look like the film might not match the grosses of The Last Jedi.
The rest of the top five included Jumanji: The Next Level at number 3 with $13.3 million, and two newcomers. The new Tiffany Haddish comedy Like a Boss shook off poor reviews to gross a respectable $10.7 million, while the legal drama Just Mercy expanded wide form a very small release and was nipping at the heels of Like a Boss at $10.2 million. Those two could flip when the actuals come out tomorrow. The other new opener bombed, as the new Kristen Stewart thriller Underwater only opened with $6.7 million.

Next week, two bigger films look to dethrone 1917, with Robert Downey Jr.'s $175 million Dolittle and the awaited Bad Boys For Life opening on many screens.
