Mean Girls Wins An Anemic Weekend Box Office

The Weekend Box Office was not very impressive this week, but something had to finish at number one, and once again it was Mean Girls.

Article Summary

  • Mean Girls tops the box office again with $11.7 million, reaching $50 million total.
  • Box office down -8% from last year with a $68 million total for the top ten films.
  • The Beekeeper and Wonka follow, while Anyone But You hits $100 million globally.
  • Upcoming films threaten Mean Girls' lead, with Miller's Girl and Dune rerelease.

Mean Girls rules for a second weekend at the box office, but it is far from impressive. The musical scored $11.7 million, down -59% from its opening, to send its total after two weeks to $50 million. With no major opening, the box office for the top ten was down -8% from this weekend last year, as the total box office was only $68 million. Mean Girls is actually only $36 million behind the total gross of the original film, which topped out at $86 million. It has a real shot at passing that at some point in the next few weeks.

Mean Girls Might Not Lead A Third Weekend

In second place to Mean Girls again was Jason Statham's thriller The Beekeeper, which added $8.4 million. Third place goes to Wonka, which is starting to peter out with $6.44 million. That film has made plenty of bank, though. The question now is, will there be a sequel? Fourth place goes to Anyone But You, which added $5.4 million and continues to see amazing holds. It's $64.2 million, when combined with overseas totals, has crossed $100 million. It is the highest-grossing R-rated romantic comedy since 2016. With Valentine's Day looming, it has a great chance to reach $100 million domestically as well. Illumination's Migration is among the top five, with $5.3 million, which is about $6 million away from the $100 million mark.

The weekend box office top five for January 19th:

  1. Mean Girls- $11.7 million
  2. The Beekeeper- $8.4 million
  3. Wonka- $6.44 million
  4. Anyone But You- $5.4 million
  5. Migration- $5.3 million

Next week, a few special events are looking to make some noise. The only wide release is Jenna Ortega's thriller Miller's Girl. Also showing next week and weekend is the reissue of Dune in IMAX, which made a lot of ticket sales this week and should crash the list. The big one we will keep an eye on is Godzilla Minus One Minus Color, which will only play for one week and should see pretty good business. It all spells doom for Mean Girls hanging on to the top spot.
