Mean Girls Topped The Holiday Weekend Box Office
Mean Girls crushed it at the Weekend Box Office even with the snow and the cold. Also, Jason Statham opened The Beekeeper to a strong gross.
Article Summary
- Mean Girls dominates box office with $33.2 million, defying weather challenges.
- Paramount's smart release strategy positions Mean Girls for a strong theatrical run.
- Jason Statham's The Beekeeper opens strong, placing second at $19.2 million.
- With no major releases soon, Mean Girls expected to retain the top spot.
Mean Girls surprised quite a few people this weekend at the box office, taking the top spot with $33.2 million. That was above tracking and overcoming severe weather that impacted much of the country. This is another win for Paramount, who initially thought this would be for streaming, then saw the potential and changed it to theatrical. Also, it was smart to release it in January as the release schedule is relatively empty; there was no massive tentpole carrying over from December, and nothing major is on the horizon until mid-February. The runway is clear for this to have a nice run in theaters for the next couple of weeks.
Mean Girls Leads A Chilly & Snowy Weekend
In second place behind Mean Girls was another newcomer, Jason Statham's latest The Beekeeper, which also overperformed a bit with $19.2 million. The last few weekends were ruled by Wonka, which slipped to number three with $10.88 million. Worldwide, the film crossed the $500 million mark. Fourth place was Migration with $8.3 million, and rounding out the top five was romantic comedy Anyone But You, which saw another great hold, only down -29% with $$8.2 million. It has now crossed the $50 million mark and is staying very steady. Further down the chart, Godzilla Minus One crossed the $50 million mark as well, a staggering achievement.
The weekend box office top five for January 13th:
- Mean Girls- $33.2 million
- The Beekeeper- $19.2 million
- Wonka- $10.88 million
- Migration- $8.3 million
- Anyone But You- $8.2 million
Next week, Mean Girls tries to hang onto the top spot. And it will, as no major releases are hitting theaters next week. It will be interesting to see how much this chart moves around these next two weeks, especially when the Oscar nominations come out and films get re-released or expanded.
