Wonka Wins The Final Weekend Box Office Of 2023

Wonka returned to the top of the Weekend Box Office to close out 2023. Universal also finished as the most successful studio in 2023.

Article Summary

  • Wonka tops the final 2023 weekend box office with $30 million in sales.
  • Universal claims the spot as 2023's highest-grossing studio with $1.93 billion.
  • Other hits include Aquaman's sequel at $26.3m and Migration's $22m surge.
  • Upcoming horror, Night Swim, aims to replicate M3GAN's success as 2024 begins.

Wonka sang its way back to the top spot at the box office in the final weekend of 2023, taking in $30 million over the four-day holiday. That also brings its total to just under $150 million domestically. It is safe to say that the film won the holiday box office. Speaking of 2023, the final total for the year is $9.03 billion. It was not bad for a year; most saw it as a down year when it started. Universal was the highest-grossing studio this year with $1.93 billion, the first time they finished on top since 2015. Disney came in second with $1.89 million.

Wonka Should Keep Raking It In For A Bit

Wonka was not the only impressive film in theaters this holiday. Well, not number two. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom took in $26.3 million, sending it to $84 million in two weeks, a far cry from what the first film did. Third place saw Illumination's Migration go up +37% from its opening to $22 million. This one may have legs, folks. The Color Purple came in fourth, adding $11 million and wrapping up an impressive debut week since opening on Christmas Day. It should cross $50 million tomorrow. Rounding out the top five was the raunchy romantic comedy Anyone But You. Left for dead after its opening weekend, it held incredibly well as an alternative to all the depressing films at the box office and took in $11 million itself.

The weekend box office for New Year's Weekend:

  1. Wonka- $30 million
  2. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom-$26.3 million
  3. Migration-$22 million
  4. The Color Purple- $11 million
  5. Anyone But You- $11 million

For our first week of 2024, we have a horror film opening wide this Friday. Atomic Monster/Blumhouse film Night Swim will try to find the same success those two found last year at the same time with M3gan. I don't think they will, though. Wonka stays on top.
